a word that chokes people up…

(By the way, we did NOT read ahead, yesterday, in this year’s Nouwen devotional… which today talks about joy & SURPRISE!)

In our readings this morning, we come across this:  “The joy that Jesus offers his disciples is his own joy, which flows from his intimate communion with the One who sent him.”  His prayer was for us to be one with Him, even as He is one with the Father.

The Mom did not realize what she’d done until afterwards, in decorating this wall behind the couch…

FAMILY PICTURES:

She has a photograph from her family on one side, one from The Dad’s family at the top, and our own family of three on the other side (a collage of The Boy’s first 10 Christmases).  In the middle–in the midst of it all–is The Holy Family, and that little thing above them is a certain word that has been cut from a Christmas card and kept for years, to be part of the decorating.

And we’re not the only ones to love this word, we’ve heard others mention it as well–how it chokes them up.  Maybe it’s because it says it so simply and clearly, and you can’t escape it’s truth…

Emmanuel.  “God with us”.
