“…strength to face it, not speed to escape from it.”

I usually start thinking of whom to choose for my Person of the Week ahead of time… hmmm… Let’s see if I can come up with someone “on the spur of the moment”.

Can’t help thinking of my son right now. He’s an excellent example of “diligence”, the latest Pillar of Wisdom. Never give up, keep at it, and all that–no matter how often you have to change your plans. Because of physical problems, or because of circumstances. If one didn’t have a sense of God’s direction in one’s life, God’s infinite wisdom being so much more than we could know, one could easily give up!

Which brings me to some neat quotes from today’s reading. But FIRST, a verse (or two)!

“Unscrupulous people fake it a lot; honest people are sure of their steps. Nothing clever, nothing conceived, nothing contrived, can get the better of God. Do your best, prepare for the worst – then trust God to bring victory.” (Proverbs 21:29-31)

Because life is a task, we need strength to face it, not speed to escape from it. When the foundations shake beneath our feet… when the anchor points of civilization disappear, when the bottom drops out and brutal blows push us up against the ropes and pound the very life out of us, we need what diligence and perseverance offer us – willingness to face whatever comes, determination to stand firm, knowing that Christ is not just with us but in us, insight to see the Lord’s hand in everything and character enough to continue.
