OK, let’s see if we can get these sermon notes summarized. John did an excellent job with the subject matter of 1 Thess. 5 (Jesus’ Return), relating it to the "Church on Fire" series.
So, his three main points. 1) Have the right perspective: which means not to be worried about the timing (as so many have done, trying to predict the year, etc.), or to be so taken up with the idea that you drop everything you’re supposed to be doing. We need to apply ourselves to the present. 2) However, have the right personna: not worried, but confident as "children of Light"–we have no reason to worry if we’ve placed our faith in Him; also, alert and "on guard" and controlled by the Spirit vs spirits (rather than "drunk", careless, and with distorted judgment), knowing that He could come any time (not to be surprised by it). Communion is so important because it is a reminder when we get too comfortable. ("This do in remembrance of Me… ’til He come, etc.") 3) v. 11: "Therefore… edify each other". While evangelism is important (and some are called to it more than others), the fundamental message of 1 Thessalonians is to be an encourager: "to give someone courage to act". And there are lots of ways to do that!
The Mom is looking forward to encouraging her grade 5/6 girls tonight, by showing them more of how Amazing God is–on the Night Hike!
